I have been hearing some other teams talking about running a 5w-30 or 10w-30 oil vs the standard 50w Racing oil?
I have always ran the 50w but if I had a chance to save some money on oil changes without taking a chance on hurting my motor, I might consider it.
Anybody running the 5w's or 10w's ?
What works for you?

I RAN 10W-40 A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO. THE REULTS WERE MIXED DEPENDING ON THE BRAND. I TRIED THE CHEAP O'REILLY'S OIL UNTIL I LOST A COUPLE OF CRANKSHAFTS TO DUE THE OIL BRAKING DOWN AND LEAVING ME WITH SOME SEVERELY SCARRED CRANKSHAFTS.. I SWITCHED TO HAVOLINE FOR A WHILE BUT HAVE NOW GONE BACK TO 50W VALVOLINE.

We run 25-50 VR1 with one quart of Lucas in it. Man after loosing oil pressure at OMs and not even hurting a single bearing I will never go without lucas in my ride again!

Ran Valvoline for years but when they started removing some of the lubricant additives for emmision standards a few years ago we started having bearing problems. Adding the Lucas is definately one solution, STP works as well. Some of the Diesel oils have some good additives as well. I like the Joe Gibbs because you're talking like 500 laps between oil changes and it has all the zinc stuff still in it.

I bought a new Comp camshaft a few years back and they recomended using Rotella as breaking in oil! Which I did. come to think of it that oil is a 15w40. What is the name of this Lucas treatment y'all are talking about? Just Lucas oil treatment?

Got to watch the diesel oils now too. Rotella is all low sulphur and so is the Delo I believe. They have taken the additives out of them too in just the last year or so. the additive is the only way to know you've got the proper stuff in it. Or run racing specific oils like the Gibbs or Brad Penn. These motors cost too much to mess with tryin to save money on oil. Gotta watch the filters too. Wix issued a recall on their racing filters. Blowin the seals out of the top or them. Happened to me two years ago at Phenix City Alabama. Of course that was before the recall came out so the car owner was just out about a 20g motor.

We use Brad Penn now but have always sworn by Amsoil... Amsoil has always been good to us but the cost just became too much. Brian feels as though so far Brad Penn has been just as good, so we will see how it works out. Brian also changes his oil after every single race so... It gets costly no matter what we run!

When they first came out with the Brad Penn, Maxwell Oil had it tested compared to the "old green stuff and he said it was not the same, similar but not the same". But that has been a few years back. Mobil 1 has treated us well, so no arguments on it. Sure pricy though. Like Mingostar stated, "These motors cost too much to mess with tryin to save money on oil."

Brad Penn 20-50 fan myself. Don't cost you an arm and leg either, and still got all the good stuff in it.

we played with oil one winter on the dyno and found a little more hp with 30wt oil versus 50wt but not that much difference in oil temps.weve been running straight 30wt ever since, either mystic or rotella the heavy duty oils.i also use it in my tow vehicles, one of which has 292,000 miles on gas engine pulling a trailer and has never been apart.that lucas oil stabalizer is good stuff also,my engine builder calls it the slickest stuff known to man.he uses it mixed with 30 wt for assembly lube.

Just add one quart of it instead of the last quart of oil. Ain't never gonna run without it again!

One of the most important things overlooked that you can't find in conventional motor oil like Castrol or Valvoline is zinc. Zinc is what keeps metal apart and lubricates your motor. And Brad Penn's oil and Joe Gibbs racing oil has the highest zinc properties for racing. Brad Penn's is the easiest to find and that is what I use. If you're serious about racing and taking care of a motor, synthetic oil with zinc is the only way.

wow, never heard zinc kept metal apart and lubricated, wonder how that works, considering zinc itself is a metal. i use 20w-50 usually castrol but have used valvoline in one motor. had a buddy that started using the gibbs stuff, he had nightmares with it, maybe he got a bad batch i dont know. cost him two motors before he figured out it was the oil though.

over half of the leading nascar teams use joe gibbs oil. i dont see them blowing up motors. you might like to talk to your motor bilder about oil or read about it?
